As we look at where we are going in life and where we want to be, we make plans, we set goals and we imagine the life we want. We might be looking into the future and envisioning a new house, a new job or a picture-perfect relationship.

We first create in our mind what we desire. Our dreams are shaped by setting goals and they give us the ability to perform and achieve everything we desire in life.

Sometimes we don’t yet have a clear picture of where we want to be, maybe we just know that where we are at now is not where we want to be. We want something different, something more. We know the life we are living is not right for us and our daily routines are draining us of energy.

Never the less, that life we picture can seem far away and we are not sure how to get there. Some of the most worthy goals may also be the most difficult to achieve.

And yet our dream life may seem impractical, unrealistic and something outside of our control. When the journey seems daunting or the path is littered with obstacles, when our goals seem like they have become too big for us to manage we may feel weighed down with worry and anxiety, which can cause us to lose sight of our goals.

Sometimes the big picture can be overwhelming, scary and even paralyzing.  Anxiety disorders affect 18.1% of the population in the United Sates every year and many more of us experience occasional feelings of being overwhelmed or fretful. These occasional feelings of apprehension about our future distract us from our authentic journey.

What can we do when we feel this way?

If this is where you are at, bring your focus back to the moment. Norman Fischer tells us, “No matter how much or how little we're doing, we're always just doing what we're doing, simply living this one moment of our lives.” Appreciate and acknowledge the gifts you already have and how they have served you so far and will continue to serve you.

Geneen Roth states, “When we are focusing on what we don’t have, we don’t pay attention to what we do have.” Don’t lose sight of your goal yet bring your vision back to the moment. Take a look at the one step right in front of you.  What one thing can you do today? What is one thing that is within your power that you can commit to this week? Is it reaching out to a colleague for help? Is it researching best practices? Is it spending time for yourself meditating, coffee with a friend?

Whatever resonates with you. Setting and striving for a goal, even if we don’t make it, can make us happier. And maybe you will find that one step is exactly where you are supposed to be.

Whatever your dream is, taking a step, setting a goal to move forward and taking action will bring you joy. Your intuition, the universe, your God will let you know when it is time to move on. Be proud of every step you take. Enjoy that step, enjoy the moment and continue on when you are ready. One step at a time.
